The Research

An Evidence-Based Study of Kate's House Residents Shows Our Housing Model Delivers Exceptional Results

Kate's House Foundation® conducted a two-year study using the ARMS REC-CAP protocol. Here are the results.

The Author

The scientist behind the study.

This research was authored by our co-founder, Dr. Sherri Candelario, Ph.D. She earned her doctorate in pharmacology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and published neuroscience research before bringing that scientific rigor to recovery housing — designing this study and analyzing its results.

From our published research

Kate's House Recovery Housing Works

Outcomes from our recovery homes, measured with REC-CAP at intake, 45, and 90 days — from the study by Dr. Sherri Candelario, Ph.D.

154 residents · 7 homes · one foundation, one set of house rules

181 days Average stay for residents who engaged 30+ days
94% Reported strong social capital & meaningful activities
1in3 Residents unemployed at intake found work
154 Residents across 7 recovery homes we own

Time in housing is time in the community

Many of our residents are coming home from the justice system. Every added day in stable housing is a day in the community, not a day incarcerated — so how long people stay is the whole story.

How residents rated their connection and purpose

On the REC-CAP Social Capital & Meaningful Activities scale (1 = lowest, 5 = highest), 94% of 394 responses landed at a 4 or 5 — a sign that residents felt connected and were spending their days on purpose.

Study Design

One cohort. One study monitor.

This study is unique. Most recovery-housing research pools results across many operators — different homes, different rules, and different people collecting the data. Ours followed 154 residents in a single cohort of seven homes, run by one foundation under one set of house rules, with the same study monitor gathering every data point.

Consistency removes the noise.

A single cohort measured by the same study monitor strips out the site-to-site and rater-to-rater variability that clouds multi-operator studies — so the results reflect the housing model itself, not a mix of a dozen programs.

The study was authored by our co-founder, Dr. Sherri Candelario, Ph.D., using the ARMS REC-CAP framework developed by Professor David Best — a validated instrument for measuring recovery capital, applied at intake, 45, and 90 days.

Why It's Repeatable

The results aren't luck. They're a system.

Strong outcomes are one thing. Outcomes other people can reproduce are another. Behind every Kate's House home is Frank's 41 Shared Housing Fit Factors™ — a documented system that defines exactly what makes an ideal shared home. It's why the housing model travels: our students have started nearly 300 shared homes nationwide.

The Shared Housing Score™ app puts those factors in your hands — score a property's fit for shared housing in under a minute.
